Himalayan Buddhist Cultural Association

The Organisation

The Himalayan Buddhist Cultural Association (HBCA) is non-profit humanitarian organisation registered under the Societies Registration Act, XXI, 1860, S/22124/91 of Government of India. Organisation was set up in 1985 to preserve and promote Tibetan Buddhism in the Himalayan regions of India. At present, organisation has up to 15 branches from Ladakh to Arunachal Pradesh. The HBCA is engaged in a wide variety of projects and continues to search for new ways to promote peace and Buddhist Culture throughout the region.

Activities

1) With education being the most effective means of preservation, the HBCA has established six primary schools and one Research Centre for Buddhist Culture. At these schools, students have the opportunity to learn 'Bho-ti language' (Tibetan) and Buddhist philosophy as well as modern subjects. Details of the individual schools and how to contribute can be found at the end of this information sheet.

2) The HBCA provides financial and administrative assistance to monks, nuns and lay people wishing to study at the Tibetan Monasteries, Nunneries and Educational Institutions in India. Many have now graduated with 'Geshe' degrees (Dr. of Buddhist Philosophy) and other higher qualifications enabling them to benefit others in return-in their own regions. Currently the HBCA offers support to over 3,000 students in this capacity.

3) In order to help Tibetan Buddhist philosophy and culture flourish throughout the region, the HBCA organizes religious gatherings and sermons by Great Buddhist Masters such as His Holiness the XIV Dalai Lama and His Holiness the XVII Karmapa. On such occasions, tens of thousands of devotees congregate from all over the world in order to receive these rare and sacred teachings. The association also publishes rare Buddhist texts in Hindi and other languages for the benefit of lay people to promote peace and Buddhist Culture throughout the world.

Current Initiative

The HBCA is funded entirely through donations. To continue to support these on-going activities, the HBCA needs to establish an office in Dharamsala, Northern India. Dharamsala is the home of His Holiness the Dalai Lama and the Tibetan Government in Exile, and has become the focal point for the preservation of Tibetan Buddhism in India. A suitable small property has just been found and as requested by Venerable Chusang Rinpoche, Madam Mimmi has kindly lend Euro 10,000 with no interest for the project. We are still trying to raise funds to payback the loans. We sincerely appreciate and welcome anyone interested in assisting the current and future initiatives. With an office in Dharamsala, the HBCA can increase awareness of its activities and projects, thus benefiting many beings around the world.

Future Objectives

1) With a population of around 31 million in the Himalayan regions of India, the HBCA has long term objectives to establish hospitals, clinics, dispensaries and libraries for the improvement of the health and well being of both children and adults of the region.
2) The HBCA is aiming to revive and set-up new spiritual centres at the various Buddhist pilgrimage sites such as Bodh Gaya, Nalanda, Varanasi and Shravasti in order to preserve, maintain and promote the unique cultural heritage of Tibetan Buddhism.
